#22 FAU MSOC Thrills with Heart-Stopping 89th-Minute Strike to Top Jacksonville

After earning a top 25 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll on Tuesday, #22 Florida Atlantic closed out their opening home-stand against Jacksonville (1-2) in a near storybook ending.

It was all defense, but a last minute goal extended the Owls winning streak to three games.

First Half

The first 20 minutes of the contest went in favor of the Dolphins as Jacksonville were able to get off three shots while FAU settled for one.

Over the remaining 25 minutes, the Owls were able to even the shots tally but both teams remained deadlocked at zero entering the half.

First Half Stats

Both sides had four shots with two on goal. FAU led in the corner kick stats line 3-0.

In a battle of the defenses, both FAU’s Alfred Mikkelsen and the Dolphins’ Simen Havig had two saves.

Second Half

For most of the second half it was a stalemate as both offenses made their attacks but were unsuccessful in scoring a go-ahead goal.

Over the final 20 minutes of the contest Jacksonville had multiple opportunities to win the contest, but it took until the 89th minute for a winner to be decided.

After a rebound in the box, Oliver Moller-Jensen’s right foot was able to score the game’s first goal off the deflection of GK Havig.

The final 48 seconds saw a 10 man formation from the Dolphins, but Florida Atlantic’s defense held on for a third-straight victory to open the season.

Stats and Leaders

The contest’s stats remained even, proof of a near draw. Both squads had eight shots, three shots on goal, and two saves.

The major outlier was corner kicks as FAU had eight compared to Jacksonville’s three. The leading shot taker was the Owls’ hero, Moller-Jensen.

Up Next

Florida Atlantic (3-0) looks to continue their winning ways as Florida Atlantic will be on the road for four-straight contests.

Starting off will be a trip to Jacksonville as the Owls will face off against North Florida (1-1). Not only is a winning streak on the line for FAU, but a goal scored would be the first Florida Atlantic will have given up all year.
