It’s time for a bounce back in Paradise as the Owls want to finish their first season under Head Coach Zach Kittley in style. In search of their first 5 win season since 2022, FAU will have a Pirates squad with a chance at the American Title Game. With Senior Day and a chance to play spoiler, Florida Atlantic has a lot riding on the last game of the season.

Florida Atlantic

Offense

After a 45-point performance against one of the better defenses in the country, the Florida Atlantic offense is feeling a great mojo in the locker room. Despite last week’s result, the Owls are nearing the end of the season and peaking around the same time too offensively.

Caden Veltkamp has had one of the best single seasons any FAU quarterback has ever put together. He ranks second in the country in passing yards per game at 343.9, has 3,783 yards and 28 touchdowns through eleven games, and already owns the program records for single-game completions and single-game passing yards (494 vs UConn). On Saturday he needs only 117 total yards to take the all-time single-season total-offense record and two touchdown passes to move into sole possession of third place on that list (four ties him for second).

On the ground, Kaden Shields-Dutton is now listed as RB1 on the depth chart and brings the big-play ability; six rushing touchdowns and 5.5 yards per carry with a 50-yard run already on the résumé. Gemari Sands is still the volume guy (96 carries, 431 yards) but Shields-Dutton has picked up the lead role so far this season. Together they average close to 80 of the Owls’ 110 yards per game on the ground. That’s what they’ll need again Saturday to keep ECU honest in the rushing defense.

With the receivers, the big story is Easton Messer as he leads the nation with 8.55 catches per game and sits at 94 receptions — second-most in program history. He is 15 grabs from the school record, 22 yards from the top-five single-season yardage list, and 206 from the all-time mark. Jayshon Platt (44-681-5), Asaad Waseem (62-665-5), and Dom Henry (35-513-4) have proven this season they can be the ‘next man up’ as Henry and Waseem showed that last week with Messer. For Platt, his role remains the same in regards to all-purpose yards, but the receiving corp will have their opportunities on Saturday.

OL Alex Atcavage

One of the 19 Owl Seniors to be celebrated on Saturday, Atcavage has been through a lot as an Owls. In six seasons, the sixth year senior has been a part of four different head coaches, but has seemed to always push forward.

That includes this season when an injury seemed to keep him sidelined at times, but the offensive line filled in the pieces and kept going. That will continue on Saturday as the group still deals with injuries, but Atcavage should be one who is up front. Expect the Owl to give it everything he’s got and it should be a top performance out of the Owls captain up front.

Defense

The numbers are what they are: 35.8 points and 195.5 rushing yards allowed per game — both near the bottom in the American — along with 31 rushing touchdowns surrendered. ECU averages 178 yards on the ground with 27 rushing scores and has hit 30-plus points in six of its seven wins.

London Montgomery (689 yards, 7 TDs) leads a true committee that spreads defenses out and then runs right at them. The Pirates love to force light boxes, and let Montgomery and the other backs grind out four and five yards a carry. Leon Hart Jr. (86 tackles) and Tyler Stolsky will have to set the tone early in the gaps, while the pass rush (22 sacks on the year) tries to disrupt Katin Houser, who has been sacked only 15 times and has thrown just six picks all season.

The secondary has three interceptions total and will need to tackle in space, win on the edges, and force at least one takeaway to have a chance to slow the Pirates down. If ECU gets ahead of the chains early, the play-action game to Anthony Smith and Yannick Smith will be wide open. One or two early stops and a sudden change could keep this game competitive; anything less and it could be another long afternoon.

DB Terez Reid

The redshirt senior is coming off one of his best performances of the season as he set a season high in tackles (7) and had one pass breakup tallying his season total at five. While the defense did not perform to their best last Saturday, looking at a player who wants to finish the momentum of the season out strong should make the former GVSU player a great leader for others around him.

Stats Comparison

East Carolina

Head Coach Blake Harrell took over as the Pirate’s leader in October of 2024 and has since gone 12-5. ECU has won four out of their last five and are wanting to close this season out with a win regardless of implications. Harrell highlighted the Owls defense and shared that he is watching out for FAU’s aggressiveness earlier this week.

Offense

The ECU offense is built around quarterback Katin Houser. The starter has thrown for 3,042 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions on a 65.7% completion rate across 11 games while adding some mobility on the ground. With just 6 picks in 379 attempts, he’s shown solid decision-making in a pass-heavy scheme that averages 282.7 yards per game through the air.

As mentioned before, it’s a committee approach led by London Montgomery. The primary back has carried 139 times for 689 yards and 7 touchdowns at 5.0 per carry; the Pirates as a unit have piled up 1,954 rushing yards and 27 scores at 4.2 yards per clip, with no single runner dominating volume but multiple threats contributing to 177.6 yards per game.

In the air, WR Anthony Smith is the clear leader and a consistent big-play option – 59 receptions, 888 yards, and 5 touchdowns. He paces the group in receptions and yards, excelling on deep shots and after the catch. Supporting pieces Yannick Smith (44 receptions – 583 yards – 5 touchdowns) and others provide reliable outlets, giving Houser multiple targets. Smith will draw heavy attention, but FAU’s secondary can’t afford to overlook the complementary receivers in underneath and red-zone situations.

Defense

The Pirate defense is opportunistic up front, with 26 sacks and 85 tackles for loss while holding opponents to 3.8 yards per rush and 127.6 rushing yards per game. They’ve contained most ground games this season, and FAU’s inconsistent line could be vulnerable to constant disruption.

The pressure starts with LB Zion Wilson – a havoc-wreaker with 5 sacks, 8 TFL, and 35 total tackles. Edge/LB Jasiyah Robinson adds 3.5 sacks and 5 TFL, while eight different defenders have at least 1.5 sacks in a rotational scheme that keeps linemen fresh.

In the secondary, DB Ja’Marley Riddle leads with 2 picks, 35 return yards, and 5 PBUs alongside 65 total tackles. The unit as a whole has 32 pass breakups and 6 interceptions, limiting foes to a 63.9% completion rate and 222.3 passing yards per game. Caden Veltkamp will face tight windows against one of the more assignment-sound groups the Owls have seen.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of the outcome of this game, one thing is for certain for Florida Atlantic: they are on the right track. It’s not every season the Owls make it deep into November with an opportunity at a bowl game, but also with an opportunity to spoil another team’s chances along the way.

The defense making stops and the offense clicking for Florida Atlantic will help keep the Owls in the contest, but executing that for all 60 minutes is the challenge FAU hopes to finally have figured out in game number 12 of the season.
